Museum Tours
The Slobodkina House was the last home of the late Esphyr Slobodkina
who lived as a Long Island resident for nearly half a century. The
Slobodkina House still contains Esphyr’s original furniture and
interior design, and is home to over 500 paintings and sculptures
when they are not on exhibition elsewhere.

A tour of the Slobodkina House Historical Site and Museum begins
with a welcome and overview of the program by the Foundation’s
executive director, Ann Marie Mulhearn Sayer. Guests accompany Ann
Marie through the upper gallery as she recounts Esphyr’s fascinating
life while pointing out paintings, sculptures, and children’s books
illustrations dating from 1906-1960. The works on view range from
abstract canvases—including works exhibited with the American
Abstract Artists group— to collages and constructions that integrate
paint, wood, plastic, and metal with found objects from everyday
life, such as disassembled typewriters and computers. Also on view
are first editions, drafts, and translated versions of the artist’s
well-known children’s books, including
Caps for Sale.
Following the tour of the upper gallery, guests will accompany Ann
Marie to the lower gallery where art from the 1960s through 2002 is on display. Guests will also be able to view polychrome
clothing
designs, hand-made dolls, jewelry designed by the artist, and a
collection of Slobodkina Family vintage clothing and artifacts from
around the world.
